Chequamegon Fat Tire Fest….

Chequamegon 40 Saturday September 19, 2009

Up way early to plant my bike and Nate’s bike at the starting line…to my surprize still not up early enough to get a good starting position. Maybe next year??? At the start…“which is totally electric” we were about middle of the pack racing down the paved roll out which was no picnic…people were passing like no tommorrow…giving it their all and also passing on the side walk…I was doing at least 23 mph and still getting passed like I was standing still…a roadie’s paradise…a place to show them who’s boss…I guess. About 4 miles into it we hit the famous Rosies Field which is an awesome site…a site of hundreds of riders pedaling through grassy rolling hills. This is where the mountain bikers start to feel their groove. I was pretty winded at this point and was hoping it would pass…it did and I felt good and started to relax. The more the track got rough the better I rode! I was happy to feel this good in a race for this year. It’s a great feeling to keep passing people and riding from pack to pack. One of the best moments was riding with Ryan from Twin Six and me asking him about if he was in a band…because of all the good bands on his web site. Another cool moment was riding in a 4 pack of Twin Six riders for a good while. The Fire Tower…I rode all but one section where someone stopped in front of me and I jumped off and ran up that section. I was waiting for my legs to show some sign of cramping but none had surfaced. Now was the test to see if I could last the next 10 miles of rollers…this is where last year I started to fade fast…The finsh was great…but I did take a bad line coming around the last corner where I got passed by one rider then a race to the finish with Twin Six team rider Joel Coon where Joel got me by one tire length. No Cramps today! Time 2:36
