WORS #5
Mt Morris
by: Joel Coon
Since this report is long past due I’ll give the cliff notes version. Three laps instead of four and an early a.m. start.
Singles were the last wave to start which meant a ton of traffic for the entire 1st lap. Passing was tough and things really didn’t shake up until the start of lap 2. I was able to sneak past Rick on the climb before the first stretch of singletrack. That put me into 3rd on the road but Greg J was breathing down my neck. I was able to hold him off until the very end of that lap.
Sitting in 4th on the final lap I was just hoping to maintain my spot. Ryan was killing it and there was no way I was going to catch him or Greg as he slowly pulled away. I knew there were some singles behind me but I wasn’t sure how far back they were. I passed as much as possible and tried to keep it smooth through the trees. Looking back periodically I wasn’t able to see anybody catching up. As the lap came to a close I knew I had 4th wrapped up. Definitely happy with that.
I felt great the entire race. I think knocking a lap off really helped. That was my best Open SS finish in probably 2 years. The course was fantastic and the entire atmosphere of the event was awesome. Thanks to Don and the crew yet again. I’m hoping they’ll be able to bring this back next year.
I have a long stretch until the next race which won’t be for about 6 weeks or so. Time to kick back and watch the Tour
