WORS #3 Big Ring Classic Sunday June 07, 2009
by: Andrew Schirpke
The third race in the WORS series started with a dry drive on Saturday morning. We hit rain an hour into the trip…not a good sign. Straight to the course for a family preride minus the lazy one. This will become more important as the story unfolds. My dad and cousin got back from their ride and I was glad I didn’t have to clean my bike like they did. Carb loading in the warming shack but it didn’t take. Late night Chinese delivery for all. Some hotel swimming and then an hour of chain and bike lubing. All in bed by ten. Alarm goes off at 5:30 and I am voted first to eat as my heat is the earliest. Quick shower and suit up. Cold enough for my BKB under my Metal kit. Get to Nine mile an hour early and eventually get around to warming up. On the line after my call up and I’m ready to rock. All systems go and my claw machine frog is zipped tied on the back for what will be a wet ride. Slow start but I move up quickly to fourth in the first hundred yards. I was behind Riley for most of the way. Jeffrey fell back and we never saw him again. Everything was going well and I passed my dad on the sidelines where the trail goes right by the finish. I was on Riley’s wheel and it was looking like a sprint for second. One last turn to get us back to the finish. I now know it’s a right…remember I didn’t pre-reide? Well a left is Elite/Comp. I realized this when I began having to jump logs and the singletrack got super tight. Unfortunately Riley also followed me. By the time I got out of it and joined back up I was seeing people I passed at the start. 5 places gone means a 7th place finish. I did however get alot of race for my money. My father laughed when I told him what happened and said my reward was I could now wash my bike. Oh well, I’ll be ready for the Subaru Cup!
